Maybe marriage isn't so bad...More men get economic boost from marriage

NEW YORK – Historically, marriage was the surest route to financial security for women. Nowadays it's men who are increasingly getting the biggest economic boost from tying the knot, according to a new analysis of census data.

The changes, summarized in a Pew Research Center report being released Tuesday, reflect the proliferation of working wives over the past 40 years — a period in which American women outpaced men in both education and earnings growth. A larger share of today's men, compared with their 1970 counterparts, are married to women whose education and income exceed their own, and a larger share of women are married to men with less education and income.

"From an economic perspective, these trends have contributed to a gender role reversal in the gains from marriage," wrote the report's authors, Richard Fry and D'Vera Cohn.

"In the past, when relatively few wives worked, marriage enhanced the economic status of women more than that of men. In recent decades, however, the economic gains associated with marriage have been greater for men."

One barometer is median household income — which rose 60 percent between 1970 and 2007 for married men, married women and unmarried women, but only 16 percent for unmarried men, according to the Pew data.

The report focused on U.S.-born men and women aged 30-44 — a stage when typical adults have finished their education, married and launched careers. The Pew report noted that today's Americans in this age group are the first such cohort in U.S. history to include more women than men with college degrees.

You say that because you have no kids. Have a couple of kids and you'll be begging for the Cath lab.

At work. Ninh, you'll feel it too once you have kids. You'll cherish doing 10 cataracts, or whatever you specialize in. Don't get me wrong, I love my kids, but I enjoy my work a lot too.

Niether I nor my wife make HUGE cash, but I do ok and my wife makes about 25% more than I do. Yes it makes thing WAYYYYYYY easier than most of my cowokers who either are the bread winner or wives have the $30k gig. She has her law degree and works as a lobbyist.

Because she makes more than I do when we got married I made the proposal we will each pay half of the monthly costs of the household and then keep the rest of our own money. We are allowed to spend it as we want with no questions asked. For every dollar of home expenses she picked up becomes a dollar of discretionary fun money for me.

Yeah, she keeps more each month than I do, but I can bring home any car I want, buy sill things like racing game chairs and xbox games. Buy a huge tv and fill a home theater room with expensive junk. She buys shoes up the ying yang and lots of cosmetic products and and clothing.

We save far more than the average couple, we do our charitable giving too. But I guess the article states the obvious, if two in the family are making decent money its easier than just one.

But seriously, I would not marry for money. It just worked out that she does ok and I do ok. You find the right person you need to be happy, and money has nothing to do with it, it just makes certain things in life easier. But just being married and having someone else around to live life as a team then by yourself makes things better. Guys who think being single is great, it has its moments, but you like it better because the right one has not come along yet.
