Is this the next "must have" car?
In this weeks issue of Autoweek, concepts from the Japan motor show are detailed over 5-6 pages. One of the better looking "production ready" models is the Nissan 350 Z. Has some styling cues of the original, but I had the original and it could never replace the joy of driving that the 240 Z offered. Could this car replace the euphoria over our beloved S2000? Do you think this car will bubble to the top of the next must-have car? Some people have mentioned the new T-Bird as a must have, but PULEEZE . . . I can't get excited over a car that doesn't offer a manual transmission, let alone styling that looks like it was contracted out to a high school study hall team Also shown was the Mazda RX8. A noble looking effort but why the back seat in a "sports car", and why the Saturn-style back doors? I thought these cars were being purchased by "empty nesters" with style over function as the main concern
So what is it going to be?
1. Nissan 350 Z
2. Ford Thunderbird
3. Mazda RX 8
4. Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe
5. or does the Honda S2000 retain its "must have" crown!

None of those cars could be considered performance rivals to the S2000. The best of them is maybe mid-way between the Miata and the S. If you prefer the style or practicality of one of them over the S, go for it.

The S2000 has already lost its "must have" status... Just look at ebay and see the pricing. It's still a hell of a good roadster, very well priced (now that you can actually get one for at or below MSRP...), but most of the "gotta have the latest fad car" buyers have come and gone.
Current "must have" cars are the T-bird (gag), E46M3's, and for the totaly rich and famous, 360 Modena Cab's.
The Nissan will undoubedly have a very strong initial market, with the expected mark-ups and difficult availability, but like the WRX, production will catch up with demand and within 7 months, anyone who wants one will be able to get one. At least thats my predicition...

I was seriously considering the new "Z" and the RX8, but I wound up with an S2000. I am really glad that I didn't wait. I cannot believe that either car will have the same driving qualities that I so love in my S2000.
