Default New law passed concerning cell phones.

About a couple of weeks ago, a new law passed which prohibits the unlocking of cell phones. Customers/cell phone carriers would have to stick with the phone's original service carrier if they want to use that phone. To this I say: "BOOOOO!!!!" This only benefits the cellular service providers.

IMO, it is a customer's right to be able to keep their phone and choose another service carrier. Let's say I've paid $200 for a nice phone with an annual contract. At the end of the contract, during which I have spent like $1000 for service, I should be able to keep that cell phone and go with another provider should I choose. Afterall, I have paid for the phone along with $1000 of service. If the law prohibits me from unlocking that cell phone, I'd have no further use for it if I chose another provider.

What do you think of this law? Personally, I think it's ludicrous. Are there reputable places that unlock phones you know of?

What are you talking about? The government gave unlocking a green light.

Could it be? Maybe I must've misread? Sometimes I do that because I scan through instead of read.

You're right! I misread. I thought it said, "...not legal..."

But the era of the freebie phone may be coming to an end. In late November the U.S. copyright office ruled that it is not illegal for consumers to "unlock" cell phones they purchase from a particular carrier.
Oh well! In that case, how much does it usually cost to unlock a phone?

Depends on the phone. From free to $25 usually.

The option to unlock was passed as federal law.

Yes, yes, I got owned. Thanks for taking the time to make that little slide show.

Yes, I had misread it, thus making this whole thread pointless. Sometimes that's the result one gets for skimming. Please delete!

Btw, the law that legalized unlocking phones is righteously correct. Customers shouldn't be restrained to one service provider with their own phones.
