The question was which car is faster b/t M5 and M3 (I would assume straight line or drag racing) so the M5 is faster due to more torque and HP.

Our local Holden HSV GTS killed it around the Nurburgring.

The M3 is FASTER 0-100km.

Here are the facts, straight from bmw.com

m3:

Acceleration 0-100 km/h (s) 5.2

the link: http://www.bmw.com/bmwe/products/automobil...atenblatt.shtml

m5:

Accelaration 0-100 km/h (in s) 5.3

http://www.bmw.com/bmwe/products/automobil...atenblatt.shtml

The M5 has more HP/Torque, but 1) it's HEAVIER and 2) the M3 has more aggressive GEARING.

At speed, it's a different story. the M3 does

Acceleration 80-120 km/h (s) in 4th 5.4

while the M5 is faster:

Accelaration 80-120 km/h (s) in 4th 4.8

flava:
How aggressive is the M3 gearing compare to the S gearing?
80-120 km/h of 5.4secs(m3) to 4.8secs(m5), that's an ass wooping. It's hard to beleive that the M3 is faster than the M5. I always though the M5 is the faster one. Guess I was wrong.

Keep in mind that that this is in the 4th gear. 4th gear is not what you'd be in if you were trying to race someone from 80km/h ... you'd be in 3rd and maybe even shifted down to 2nd. I'm sure that the S2000 would get it's ass whopped real bad by both of these cars if it was involved in this excerice - it's about 7secs for S2000 (I German test has it at 7.2).

ps. In 5th it takes 9secs for the 80-120km/h sprint in the S2000.

Just for interest's sake
February 2000 Car Magazine (Engalnd)

They tested a number of performance cars around the Oulton Park circuit. I'm not going to list all of them but for interest:

S2000 - 1:15.4
M5 - 1:14.9
Impreza RB5 - 1:14
Lancer EVO VI - 1:13.1
GTR R34 - 1:12.3
360 - 1:11
GT3 - 1:10.3

Love to see what a chipped GTR would do considering it is conceding 130 bhp to the 360 and nearly 100 to the Porsche.

Hi Bernie, not an 'disagreement' .. just a discussion :-) I'm aware of those statements:
------------
Pg 46 - (quote) "and the M5? "I would say ten to fifteen seconds slower, but with heavy cars like these.........".
Pg47 - (quote) .........it became the benchmark.
------------
Though, they're nothing more that 'opinions', I really want to see the hard numbers to back that claim ... as it is I have not - I was very pissed of after reading 'that' article as they did not publish any 'facts' or 'hard data' ... just a bunch of wishy-washy opinions. I don't understand why bother going all the way to Nurburgring, having the whole track for 2 days and not clocking the cars ... I can't tell you how interested I'm to hear what lap-time the GTS can do there (as my father has a HSV R8 with the 'premium' brake package). Though, no real facts ... I do agree that the Olofsson know's the track like a back of the hand and if he actually managed to get a 'time' in the GTS and then I'd take that time as gospell ... though opionions are just that; and everyone has one.

Also, even though it is not out of question that the GTS can beat an M5 around Nurburgring (I just want proof), I see it impossible for it to macth (or better) F355 - F355 is lot quicker in the straighline (about 190km/h trap-speed at 400m while GTS does more 170 - 180km/h at 400m mark), is lighter and will definatelly brake and handle better ... so I am a bit weary about the '15 sec advantage over M5' claim. Maybe a couple of seconds, but 15 puts it it 933 Turbo teritory (in straighline and handling) - which I see right on impossible.

Stightly of topic, how many laps did you do around Nurburgring? And what WAS your lap-time? :-) I know the track very well and can replay every single corner in my head ... though I have not had the pleasure of driving there (yet). Also, tell me more about the 993 ... I've never driven one but love those cars. You say 'it's not as great as a lot of people think' - why is that? How do you find the S2000 compared to it?

ps. I do know that the GTS laps roughly the same times as the S2000 at Winton so that leads me to believe that corners/braking are it's weakness ... it has a lot of grunt but from the numbers, the S2000 can overcome the 'power deficit' on a tracks like Winton. Nurburgring has some very long straights where the GTS would fly away from the S2000, but then there are a lot of very tight twisty sections where the S2000 would have the advantage over the GTS (though, the upbill sectiuons would favour the GTS greatly again). S2000 laps Nurburgring at 8:39 (just for reference value).

pps. Few more numbers - around Nurburgring, the 996 does 8:17, M Coupe (not US spec) does 8:22 and 993 Turbo 8:12.

ppps. Could you possibly scan this article and send it to me? I would love to buy that issue but obviously missed the boat :-(
