I'm sure a lot of people have this problem, sleep deprivation. Basically, during college, I've been sleeping for only about 4 hours a day...now the most I can sleep is only 6 since I guess that's what my body considers a lot

I've conditioned myself to only be able to sleep 6 hours a day at most. No matter how tired I am, I'll wake up after sleeping for around 6 hours and not be able to go back to sleep. I'd like to at least sleep a good 8-9 hours.

Anyone have a good solution to this? Damn college....

Mate, I'd hapily swap metabolisms with you - I need a good 10 hours kip to feel perky - pretty hard when your work is governed by another time zone which means I have to be in work about 6am Needing only 6 hours sleep would make my life a lot easier

Look on the bright side, think of all those extra hours in the day you can now spend on S2ki rather than just snoring them away

I remember after I finished my final dissertation (pulling about 60 hours straight without rest) I actually found it hard to get to sleep afterwards so I know what you mean....

I think most people would tell you you need more sleep when you're younger and less as you get older. As someone who used to work tremendously long unsocial hours on occassions, I noticed that I could become conditioned to managing on less and less sleep. You can also become very conditioned to WHEN you sleep, either during the night or during the day. Changing from one sleep period to another can take a while to get used to. Stress doesn't help, and academic study is a stressful, competitive environment. Try to do whatever it is that helps you relax and give yourself a little time!

I'm lucky to get over four hours at a stretch; however, since I'm retired, I'm pretty much on my own schedule. I'll wake up at say, 3:00 a.m. and get on the net. After two or three hours I can always go back to bed for a couple of hours. Brief naps during the day are nice, too. Sleep when you can; otherwise, work or play.

Have you tried Melatonin? I believe it's legal in the States. It's supposed to help you sleep but is not a sleeping pill. Maybe you should try a shot of Brandy (2-3 oz.) just before bed. This works if you have trouble getting to sleep. If you're waking up prematurely, it may be a "tortured" mind. In this case, you may need a different kind of therapy. Also, you are on other types of "medication" this may affect your sleep patterns.
