To an earlier point, I can verify that the sound of a pump shotgun being racked IS, indeed, sufficient to scare someone off. I had an intruder on the back deck of a vacation cabin in NC some years ago and after I chambered a round, the next thing I heard was very hurried footsteps away from the house.

I have also never had a jam and I've used some pretty beat-up and poorly maintained shotguns in my time. That said, I keep mine clean and use the proper ammo. A pistol grip gives me the mobility I would need, but for those interested in something more compact (and illegal without reams of paperwork), check this:

i've been a big fan of 1911s as long as i've known about firearms, but i've always shied away from getting one because none are lefty friendly, even the ones with ambidextrous safety & slide release wasn't good enough. anybody know if there's a true left-handed 1911 out there with port to the left and magazine release on the right in addition to the slide & safety?

Never heard of one.

Interesting idea though. Hope it works better than those "lefty" scissors from elementary school though...

I've never seen a left-side ejection port on a 1911. Post up if you find one (just curious, I'm no lefty).

If you find one let me know. Always tough to find stuff for south paws.
