People hire their friends and friends of friends typically.
+1

a few years back, me and my friend was applying for Jack in the box (her other friend was a shift leader there), well my friend got the job, its understandable cause most fast food wanted female workers. And the manager told me that he preferre a worker that can speak spanish and english. Which I can understand living in socal. I told him its cool.
But my homegirl persuave the manager to hire me ( which is rare cause every single person that works there is mexicans, I am asian btw) , and a few weeks later he called me and ask me if I still wanted to work, I said yeah.
So I only got the job cause of my friend. With most jobs, its all about who you know, sad but true.

Aim for utilities companies. In most areas the electrical infrastructures are aging or straining to keep up with energy needs, and those companies are doing extremely well. Throught the down economy my buddy who works in financial division of an electrical utility here in Calgary said they received 118-120% of their bonuses when compared to the previous year.

Most electrical grids are in need of upgrades, and the companies that run and support them haven't seen a hint of the recession.

Where does your buddy work? I have some friends at Atco and Epcor working as realtime energy traders. It sounds like they're still doing very well in this economy.

That sounds more like engineering and tradesman work more then business management.

But I do agree, the utility companies are doing great right now. I had numerous offers from them (engineer) so I'm sure they're hiring.
No no, I am referring to office-based employees, accounting/billing/financials, ERP specialists (SAP), software development, project managers, etc.

Definitely the tradesman with these companies are also doing well and are being kept busy, but the people at the office are the ones that manage and operate "the machine," the field people are the ones who install the parts and oil the gears

He works at FortisAlberta, but companies like AltaLink are also ramping up for a very very busy year. They're even advertising all over the place regarding their infrastructure upgrades and their current land negotiations with owners in all the areas they need to run the lines.
