Firstly, the European countries are small. One gallon there can make a whole trip around their countries, while one gallon here can barely get out of the front yard. The point is, the U.S. is vast and requires long trips to go to certain places. Going out of state here is like going out of countries there. As a result, one gallon over there, though expensive, can get them to many more places due to very short distances.

Secondly, if you looked at the bottom countries on that list above, although many of their prices are only a dollar-something, but their income per capita is only a fraction compared to that of the U.S. So actually, when taken into consideration, their prices are EXTREMELY high at $1.xx . That's like Americans are paying $50/gallon in comparative ratio.

ROFL @ Hummer drivers

Lets do some math, if a Hummer driver puts 20,000 miles on his POS by the end of the year @ roughly 10 MPG. That means he consumes 2,000 gallons.

at nearly $3 a gallon thats $6,000 a year in gas

I live in Los Angeles, where driving is everything. I don't put more than 11,000 mi/yr on my vehicles.

Cost in gas:
2003: $844
2004: $915
2005: $275 projected: $1100-1200

This is for the S2000.

For the Hummer, considering it's an American-made vehicle, I'd also think maintenance would also be rather high if it was driven 20K miles per year.

Come to Canada...it's only 92 cents here!
But when you factor in exchange and converting from gallons to litres we're paying significantly more.
