extreme makeover - house edition - stupid question
Last night they took someone's 1800 sq foot house and replaced it with a 5400 sq foot mansion! That was really nice, but why the hell would they ever do that? then they gave this family $100k for "living expenses" since the utilities would be triple (or more) than the previous house.
I don't get it though.... the other houses in the neighborhood were probably all 2000 sq ft. So now this semi poor family of 5 who doesn't have any great need for 5400sq ft has a house that is towering over all of their neighbors.
I like the idea of the show, but didn't get why they did that on last nights show.
anyone watch it?

My guess is the family will burn up the money and end up not being able to afford the house. I give it 1 year before its on the market.
just like winning $1M, most people go buy a $50k car, big house then go bankrupt within 2 years.

I was thinking the same thing last night. But look closely at some of the shots of other houses in the neighbourhood... many of them are quite large (3000+ sq ft)...
but still, 5300 sq ft and a fricking porte cochere are probably overkill for a home makeover

I also saw it last night and agree this episode seemed excessive. They've done large projects before, but this one seemed over the top and almost unnecessary. Obviously the house needed to be replaced, but their square footage was more than doubled!
I've also always wondered about the quality of a house that's slapped together in a week by people running ragged, working around the clock...

i could maybe see if there were 10 kids running around, but there were only 3.... and one of them should be moving out soon.
That was a huge LOT...... there wouldn't be enough room on my lot to build a monster like that.
I am pretty sure those people could have sued whoever they bought the house from for not disclosing that problem with the septic tank. o well... now they have a 5400sq ft awesome house.
wonder if there are any rules that you cannot sell it for a certain time period?

I thought the same thing. The house sticks out like a sore thumb. I think it would be cheaper just to move the family out to a better neighbor hood but that wouldn't make for a good show. Imagine trying to sell the thing one day? Your house would be too expensive for anyone that would want to live in a crappy neighborhood.
