do restaurants reuse food?
I recently ate at a small chinese food restaurant in San Ramon and had a bunch of food left over that I wanted to eat at home so I asked the guy for a box. instead he grabbed my plate and took it to the back and boxed it for me.
when I opened the box I noticed it was mostly my rice, and had *SIGNIFICANTLY* less of the mandarin beef I had ordered. my gut tells me the guy probably scraped some of the meat off to re-heat and give to the next customer who orders what I did.
anybody here ever work in the restaurant industry, esp. a small privately owned restaurant? I've wondered this for years. I've heard rumors about bread rolls that are put on tables that aren't used (but might have been touched) will get re-used and given to the next customer.
I swear, from now on, when I eat out, I'm going to box my own food. I don't even want to think about the possibility of eating something off of someone else's plate though.
for those of you who might be in San Ramon, don't eat at 3 Brothers Chinese Food restaurant off of San Ramon Valley Blvd. (a block from the Harley-Davidson dealer)

Ive worked in the Restaurant industry for quite some time now.
ANyway....a "poorer" restaurant, like chinese, korean, mexican may very well do that. I am not too sure about it. However, a real restaurant, will not reuse food you didnt eat, but they will reuse food you sent back. Meaning, if you order something and its not to your liking (steak overcooked, oversalted something) they will recycle it and give it to the next customer.
P.S. Dont order fish on mondays.

The closest I've been to working in the restraunt industry was working at a bagel shop when I was in high school. At the end of the night, if we had any leftover bagels, we donated them to a local homeless shelter.
But I've made it a habit to box my own food as well. Some restraunts insist on boxing your food for you, but I tell them I'm still eating or that I'm not sure how much I want to take with me.

i don't understand the comment about poorer restaurants... what does that have to do with anything? i don't think they will reuse items that were returned if it was bad. Cause the next customer will complain as well.
I did however work at a chinese restaurant and saw that they keep some of the leftovers so the waiters can eat it themselves..

fyi: fried rice in many chinese restaurant consists of leftover rice and meat, so for all you fried rice lovers out there, you might want to think twice before ordering fried rice next time, if you have an issue with "recycled" food.

Back in highschool my girlfriend worked at a Wendy's. She informed me that the Chilli really is made fresh daily.... with the previous day's unused hamburgers.
