And perhaps in a few years you'll dump it for something newer and more exciting. Is this the analogy you tell your girlfriend?

I married her because I knew I loved her with a lasting love. What I only now realize is that love grows stronger with time - more deeply rooted, based on things that only an intimate relationship can show. Perhaps that's the neatest thing of a proper marriage - it ages well (ie, it improves with time).

That said, I also married her because I knew that I could offer her a lot. It certainly wasn't all about the present, but also about the future, where I saw us going, etc, etc.

The decision is so multi-faceted it's hard to describe. I loved her more than anything in the world, yet I love her more now.

also, as far as a negative aspect of casual sex you mention it creates a player mentality...what is wrong with that...I know I test drove a few different kinds of cars before buying the S!!
Read back - I listed my reasons why being a player isn't good. Also, there's a difference between minor sampling and being a player.... I didn't marry the first girl I dated seriously - I waited 'til the second one.

Also, you haven't "bought your S" yet - you're still unmarried, correct? That would be my point - always test driving, never fully satisfied....

Brant: Why mightn't marriage be an option?

JonBoy, I just find it interesting that the only reason you love your wife as much as you do is because of an institution imposed from outside rather than a love you feel from within.

I wonder if you would self-impose that constraint if society didn't recognize marriage as a valid institution.

Yes, I know I'm wandering WAY off topic...I just find this all very intriguing...

I've wondered about stuff like this as well. I am not a big believer in marriage. If you want do it, cool. If not, then I don't see what the big deal is. Marriage to me is just a piece of paper stating that someone else validates my relationship. I don't care about such validation. My relationship is my relationship, and I don't need any external people to recognize or condone it.
