I go to see A LOT of movies at the theater. I see all kinds of movies; my interests are very broad. You should see how many AMC moviewatcher points I have. Anyway, I buy DVDs also, and I have a better than average home theater set up... so I like it both ways.
Going to movies is a ritual for me, but not in the loud annoying audience participation way Seung described. It's a personal ritual because I have theaters I like, and food I like to eat when I go there, and a place I like to sit. I guess I'm set in my ways.
There's no substitute for real high quality analog projection in a good auditorium. This applies to people-dramas as well as action films and sci fi pictures. A 480P DVD just doesn't come close even on the best projection television. Audio can often be replicated very well on a home theater setup, but the video is just not there yet. Particularly with regard to the way some DVDs are overcompressed and have all sorts of crappy artifacts introduced like edge enhancement. Analog emulsion projection is still the ultimate, and that's why I like to see movies in a real theater first.
