For all You Smokers

On the other hand, my uncle (by marriage) never smoked a day in his life, was an English professor and died of lung cancer.
Hell, I never thought I would live to see thirty, now I look back on 30 fondly...

Preacher, I don't expect you to care what I think. If I were a smoker, I wouldn't care what non-smokers think either.
If you believe cancer to be 100% genetic, then I think you're ignoring science. Research has shown time and time again that smoking will increase your susceptibility to lung cancer. If not, there's still emphysema, yellow teeth, bad breath, etc. I know, because my father smokes and I've been subjected to lots of the side effects, one of them being second hand smoke.
A little bit OT, but this is an analogy that my track coach in HS gave me, and I think it makes perfect sense:
Imagine that you could choose to have a car, any kind of car in this world. The only catch is that you can never ever have another one, no matter what. So of course, you're going to baby this car, and take very very good care of it. After all, it's going to be your only one for life.
It's the same with your body, except that you can't specifically "choose" what body type you're given. However, if you care that much, exercise can help you sculpt yourself into what might be your ideal body.

You got me all wrong... I do NOT beleive that cancer is 100% genetic, just that you can be genetically predisposed towards cancer, much as people can be can be genetically predisposed towards alzheimers and osteoperosis.(sic?)
Just because my grandfather had Alzheimers doesn't mean I will, but I am more likely to have it than someone with no history in their family.
I am aware that smoking is bad, but like riding my bike without a helmet, it's a risk I take with my eyes wide open. (Well.... cool shades... but you know what I mean )

Jay, There's some pretty crazy comments there. So you have no respect what so ever for smokers? Do you think I'm capable of serving my moderatorship with this monkey on my back? I mean I must be weak willed...Correct? No respect for your Father either? Wow, and with that nice car he helped you buy, Gee, What's the world coming to?
I'm sure this isn't your point, or hey, perhaps it is, I just wouldn't be so quick to type it out, That's all. It **** ing ( yep I swore) kills me, how some people, dare I say Holier the Thou, think that people who smoke are bad, weak, plague to society. I mean give it a rest allready.
I thought the original post was funny, I saved the picture for future reference. But your comments are unwarranted.
Mike
A smoker, who runs 10 miles a day, works out 3 days a week, and was a pro Motocross rider. and drives excessivly fast, and crosses the road with out looking both ways, and runs with scissors for the shear thrill, But these ciggarettes are killing me!

This needs to go on my PET PEEVE list. Why are people so quick to write such trash about smokers all the time.....?????
I think that we should ban smoking threads from the board as they are probably worse than political threads.
There are the smokers, the non-smokers and the reformed (ex) smokers (I am one of the later). These three groups will never agree and I get fed up of people preaching about the ill's of smoking. I know I don't have to read the threads, but in the last few days it seems that many of them have turned into smoking/anti-smoking threads.
Can we not just accept that some people smoke (and yes, most of them realise it harms them), and some people do not.
I am bored of reading about why non-smokers hate smokers, we all know that you do, DEAL WITH IT.....

I have little to no respect for people who smoke around nonsmokers. It's fine if you want to make your own clothes and hair stink, but keep that away from me. For this reason, I dislike bars and refuse to date anyone who smokes.
The reasons that smoking around others is inconsiderate outnumber any that I can list off, but I ask you to think of your family, if you smoke at home. My mother smoked for years until it killed her (congestive heart failure, NOT cancer), and by the age of 4, I had had pneumonia FOUR times. My pediatrician even has it noted in my medical records that living in a smoking household contributed to my weakened lungs and 3 relapses into pneumonia. Walls painted white in our house were stained by the smoke within months, and nothing left our house that didn't reek of smoke, including us. It was a relief to me to go off to college and live away from home so that I didn't have to live with that smell all of the time. I have no idea how much my mother smoked in a day, but I can tell you that ANY is too much around your kids.
You betcha I'm a nonsmoker, and you can be sure that your cigarette, when lit around me, is offensive; so I'm only being polite when I say "ok" when you ask if I mind if you smoke...

I don't believe that if you smoke, you are bad. A smoker isn't necessarily weak-willed, but I do think that they have made a bad decision to start. I know that may make me sound holier than thou, but each person has their own choice to do as they please, just as I have my right to air unpolluted by cigarette smoke. Once I was walking behind someone on a sidewalk while they were blowing smoke which ended up right in my face, and they were drinking out of a DARE mug! I just found that to be hilarious.
Like Sondra stated, everyone in my house cannot stand the smell of cigarette smoke, and we force my father to smoke in the garage or on the deck behind my house, and even then the smell still lingers. My main beef with smoking is that in my eyes, it is slow suicide.
My father and I had a bet in which if I kept up my end of the deal, he would be forced to quit smoking. I kept up my part, and he never quit...and for that, yes I lost respect for him. Breaking a promise to your kid so you can smoke is a pretty strong statement, IMO. However, I never said that I disrespect or even have no respect for my father. I do, but sometimes I'm saddened by his smoking, because I want to see my father around for a long time, but again he's making the conscious decision that smoking is more important than his health. It's that stuff that I disrespect, and buying me a car or the world can't change that.
Once again, I'm sorry if you find my viewpoints that offensive, but it's how I feel.
