OK, I'm officially out of bourbons [good bourbons] to try out at the ABC. I am on a sebatical until I get back to GA and pick up some new kinds. Til then, I've switched over to Irish Whiskey
Classic Jameson to start of with, but next will be RedBreast.
Jameson is very light on the palate, not a robust flavor but strong oak notes. Very good whiskey imho, but I still prefer bourbon. At $26 for a 1/5th, great value.
Rated #1 since it's the only Irish Whiskey so far

It's probably like the last 4 bottles of Old Potrero I had. . . a rich melange of caramel and rye (yes, the rye still hits on the nose a bit), with luscious notes of orange cinnamon, with a finish that has a touch of clove and vanilla.
Arguably one of the best things I've ever quaffed, fresh POG, original Coke, and 44 year old scotch included.

So I went to the liquor store tonight to continue down my Irish Whiskey road when I realized I didn't have any real bourbon glasses. Since the xmas season hit, I've been seeing gift sets in the ABC for Jim Beam, Jack, and Makers, among others. I came across this gift set, with some (imo) cool glasses included. $30 and I thought I was done. Then I spotted a bottle of Russell's Tradition, with the staggering price tag of $121.99. Now I've never even heard of this, and was not about to spend that kind of money without research backing it up, so I passed. Has anyone tried that bourbon? At any rate (and for those who have been following), we have come full circle, as Makers was the first bourbon I bought when this quest began. I still find it to be a good bourbon, middle of the road with light-medium body and a medium bite. Could use a better finish, but has an excellent nose. Honestly, Makers is just refined Buffalo Trace imho.
My biggest pet peeve though has made it so I don't buy Maker's again though...a f@#king screw off cap on a premium bourbon is sacrilege! USE A f@#kING CORK!

High West is good stuff. The more curious of y'all should try the Bourye.

Screw caps are good..... cork will decay and let pieces drop into the bottle...
Screw caps are good...... trying to pack an open bottle with a cork can be a challenge..... screw cap gives you piece of mind that it will not spill....
Screw caps are good.... Dermestes lardarius will bore into cork....

Two new bourbons tasted over the holiday. I traveled back to my native Georgia homeland and while passing through Augusta, stopped off at Toast Beverage with the hopes of finding a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle there. Unfortunately, they were out, but found a few new bourbons to try! I purchased W.L. Weller, Noah's Hill, and Willett. I have stashed the Noah's Hill. I've tasted it before in downtown Raleigh and I know it to be a premium bourbon worth it's cost and weight.
1) W.L. Weller
This bourbon was on sale half-priced at $18.99. A steal imho. Robust, sweet oak palette, with a full nose, and nice bite on the finish. That said, this is another bourbon with a screw-off cap and left me the next morning with that "sweet liquor" taste in my mouth and a slight headache. I'll put this one above Maker's 46 based on value and sheer taste, but something tells me this is a "cheap bourbon."
2) Willett (112 of 273)
Very good! Bottle number 112 of 273! Missing a nose though, as I couldn't smell anything for several docile attempts until I jammed my nose in the glass and hinted at sawdust and alcohol. Even nosing the bottle there was very fine hints of oak, but nothing really noticeable. The bottle itself had me sold and at $34.99 a bottle I find this to be valued right with Woodford! The taste is where it's at! Medium-bodied and notes similar to Woodford stand out. Crisp palette with a woody finish that lasts forever and would go great with a nice cigar. Very please and will put this one, based on value alone, right below Basil Hayden's. Pick this up if you find it!
