Girl I work with thinks I'm a redneck because of all the car stuff I am in to. Was wondering why I'd get my hands dirty doing an oil change when Jiffy Lube can do it for a low price.

It is getting tougher to justify DIY oil changes. With coupons, an oil change is $20. I spend that much to do it myself, and have to deal with the clean up and recycling.

Not to mention at this time of year the last thing I want to do is sit out in sub-zero temperatures working on the car.

I'd rather pay some poor schmuck $20 to do it for me.

I've been thinking the same. I pay about $5 for an OEM filter and about $22 in oil. The Pilot and Odyssey have the same engine, so they're identical.

I only continue to DIY because I need the flexible schedule. I do my oil changes at between 9 and 11 PM when the house is quiet and all my distractions are sleeping.

The only reason I do it myself is I can. That and to avoid these scenarios:

Drain plug stripped,
Drain plug loose,
No new drain plug washer used,
Drain plug overtightened,
Oil filter loose (seldom ever overtightened),
Filler cap loose (found later on trans tunnel wedged between firewall and trans,
Lost all oil from any several of the scenarios above...

Same here.

Except this time of year, without a lift.

Add "wrong weight/type" of oil used. (I suspect a lot of shops have a "one-size-fits-all" 55 gallon drum of oil.)

Moves from Vermont to Texas. Gets caught drifting in an empty mall lot by mall security in the aftermath of the freezing rain.
