Whew! That's Over!
Well I succombed to my annual Spring fever today and test drove a Boxster S and a Cayman S back to back. I have been wondering for years if I should make the switch to a P-car and can honestly say that I got it out of my system. Didn't like them at ALL when comparing to my S2000. The Boxster at idle sounds like a 60's air cooled Volkswagon bug and I just could not find a comfortable seat position for the clutch pedal travel. Shifter didn't compare either. The Cayman was a much better car from an all around standpoint- felt more connected and solid. If my S wasn't the point of comparison I think I'd seriously consider the Cayman S. I drove up in my s and drove away in my S and let me tell you- for a pure old fashioned true sports car feel the S2000 wins hands down (At least my modified S does). The Porsche is more of a refined cruiser full of crap I have no use for- parking assistance, oil monitor ( no dipstick on it), electronic junk I don't need when driving hard and enjoying the experience. I also found the seating position preferable in the S ( lower). So now I can cross off Mr.P car.Frankly I was quite surprised and disappointed .

Thanks for this write up. I have been looking at the boxsters as well online for a while, but never got around to testing one out. I figured the Porsche would have a bunch of useless gages and buttons that don't really appeal to us S owners.
Looks like I'll cross it off of my list too!

Dave - great review.
I test drove the Cayman S a couple of years ago. I loved how planted it felt but there was something amiss. Felt the clutch was too heavy, but then I am spoiled by the easy clutch on the S2000. I liked it, but not nearly as much as I like the S2000. The S2000 feels alive with all the noise, whereas the Porsche was efficient and clinical.
I still like the P-cars and they have their place, but the S2000 is special. Some day though I'd like a late 80's or early 90's 911, but that is one of those pipe dreams just like the BMW E36/8 M Coupe. The S2000, I want to keep and I hope I do for a long time, even though other cars may come and go.
EDIT: Glad you are not buying the P-car. You and that S2000 of yours are made for each other. I can't see any other car being your baby.
