cc size has nothing to do with ability. 99% of riders couldn't max out he performance of a ninja 250.
My advice, pay cash for whatever bike you choose. That way you're not bent out of shape when you drop it, because you will. If you're taking out a loan for a toy you're doing it wrong.
I won't get into it why these choices are less than favorable for a very first bike, most people will tell you this and honestly you probably won't listen anyways. I'm just sick of seeing people get hurt because they want to look cool on their first bike, go out and get a loan on a bike that cannot ride worth a damn and then get hurt on it. it happens all too much

you WILL drop your bike. period. if not by gravel or oil, then because of the first emergency brake you have to do.
you will see people with a 250 who can't max it out yes... but its just like a car. 90% of the people on this forum (myself included) cannot max out a stock s2000 on a track. their ability just is not high enough.
just be smart about it. wear leather and proper riding gear. looking cool has nothing to do with it. if you just want to look cool then keep driving your S.

I don't believe you have to start on a small bike. I learned on a 700. You have to respect the bike and your current lack of talent. Take the MSF beginner rider course and don't play "Ricky Racer" the first year. Gear is going to cost you a grand, so plan that into your budget before you buy any bike. I think a less expensive used bike is smart advice. Scratches and dings add character to old bikes. They cost big money to fix on new exotic bikes.
Be safe...I lost a good friend this week who was new to motorcycles and lost control of his sport bike.

So sorry to hear that Mark.
Great guy. Only 31 years old. We had some great autocross battles. One memorable season, he and I were battling for the year end championships in the Finger Lakes and Western NY regions. It came down to the last event in each region. He won FLR and I won WNY.
He will be missed.
Lost a childhood friend too 5 years ago. He and his wife had a newborn.
I'm hoping this is not Chris in that Subaru WRX that set the fastest time at the Autocross school I attended.

Wasn't Chris, but he was fast! He was our Solo chair a couple of years ago.
