Illegal in NY State, and unnecessary in Rochester. Not enough traffic here. I will admit I'm not comfortable being the last guy in line at a stop light.

Not me, no way
I like to keep as far away from cars as I can

I will admit, if after some kind of big event if I'm trapped in a non-moving parking lot waiting for a gazillion people to get out of one exit I may take to some splitting, but that's only in the kind of situation described. Sometimes I will break my rule about riding in the dark and take the bike over to the 4th of July Fireworks, just 5-6 miles from my house. The parking lot over there is absurd and I have done this to get out before. I in fact take the bike just because I know it will allow me to get out so I don't have to sit in a parking lot for 45-minutes trying to get out.

I rode into the city for the fireworks a few years ago. Backed in between two parallel parked cars, watched the show from the bike, thumbed the starter at the end of the show and was on the expressway before any cars were moving.

When I was in the Frisco area last fall, I saw the bikes moving through stopped and bearly moving traffic which made sense. I also saw the traffic on the freeway doing 40 to 55 MPH bumper to bumper and bikes were lane splitting at 30 MPH faster than traffic. Two different situations IMHO.

When I was out in Cal, we lane split all the time. It's ok as long as you don't blast.
The drivers out there at that time knew and respected it and cut the bikes a large berth.
Around here... naw.

Yea, when I was in San Diego for a month I saw it all the time
Often there the expressways slow down to less than a crawl, and the bikes just shot right through the gap
I suspect if I lived out there and I was given the choice of creeping along and over heating the bike, any myself, I too would split the lanes
And same thing, around here, nah, plus, I really don't ride the bike on expressways much, and in my little city most of the multi-lane highways are expressways
