One of the apartments I stayed in while in Memphis had a roach problem as well. Room mate and I had to be extra diligent about keeping stuff clean and food covered.
Did not help that Memphis is swamp land and therefore a breeding ground for a diaspora of bugs.

You should see the roaches in some of the buildings on South Campus.
*shudder*
Best story: I was in the basement of Clark Gym, a favorite hangout of the roaches, due to the fact that it is below the swimming pool, so it is nice and moist, warm, and humid. I open the door to our equipment room, and inside is a roach about twice as big as my thumb. As soon as I open the door, the damned thing hisses and proceeds to skitter straight at me.
I closed the door and decided the work to be done could wait another day

Something like 2 or 3 doors north of main street
The apartment was great, just did not like the roaches
I was on the top floor on the south side of the building, left in this pic
And I loved the fire escape, it was my balcony

HA! You were literally on the "wrong side of the tracks" from where I lived on Culver.
I was at 214, right near the 490.
On the plus side, the tunnel on Atlantic Ave right under the train tracks got its fair share of top-down VTEC through it when I lived near there.

My roommate and I picked our apartment by the available parking. We had 6 cars and a motorcycle between us. We were given a 3x5 card to fill out our vehicle information. When we asked for a 2nd one, because the 1st was full, they said "you can't have that many vehicles here." We convinced them that some were stored winters and that we would store the winter cars off site in the summer. We then proceeded to bring them all with us. Worked out well though. We parked them away from the building where no one else wanted to park, and created our own buffer zone by parking the good ones between the winter cars.
