Question: In the past I've heard that turbos tend to need replacement. I think I heard someone say around the 60-70K miles mark. Is that true? If so, why is everyone going after Turbos (as evidenced from the number of cars that come equipped with this tech)? Has reliability improved to a point where they can last a loong time with proper maintenance?

Just curious and was wondering if someone could answer.

The 2nd new car I ever owned was a Chrysler Laser Turbo.

Got 325,000 miles out of the original turbo, never had to have it replaced.

subarus get well over 100kmi without replacment, i had no problems with my wrx, bought it at 50kmi and sold it at 80kmi, my buddy owns it now at has 110kmi on it and it's perfect still. Only turbos i have heard of people replacing constantly are audis

And as time marches on, technology improves, especially the cooling technology, because heat, lots of heat, and how to manage that heat is the challenge of a turbo's longevity

Wonder how the BMW turbos are faring? Of course it'll probably be another few years before we see any possible issues with them. They seem to have rectified the HPFP issue which per BMW was happening because of the ethanol content in our fuel. Turns out owners in Europe have never had HPFP failure.
