This has become a popular spot to put a little latch so it is out of sight, and less costly to make
Of course Mom's Kia does this, only it is an electronic button that takes tyhe slightest touch and the hatch opens, but that's Kia

Oh, I misinterpreted. I thought that was supposed to be a 2-door hatch. That's why I was commenting that it looked like a bad attempt at making a 2-door by just shaving the handles off the rear doors.
However, looking at those rear doors I still can't see a spot where you'd open them. Must be the photo angles
EDIT: Now that I look at it some more, I see the handle is right next to the c-pillar. Not the best design IMO.

Like early pathfinder and the older non-USA Civic and that Acura BMW Z6 like thing, the clever hidden handle, I love this design detail!
Oh, and that's right, the Veloster will have this detail on the passenger's side
