I had a rental car in Maui. Took the dirt road back from Hana. (Expressly forbidden in the contract!) The road was so rough, that you couldn't do much over 10 mph. I discovered it smoothed right out above 45 mph. 
We had some local autocross guys who rented a Neon for every autocross. They even had spare wheels for it with r-compounds.
To sum it up, I'd say your theory has a strong foundation.

I gave up on Ford when my 94 Ranger suffered from the same design flaw in the front axles/hubs, that afflicted my 86 Ranger. 8 years between the two trucks and they made no attempt to fix a weak point in their design!
