I was glamping in Belieze for a bit and since I did not get bitten by any poisonous spiders or snakes, I wanted to get back to the engine,
I pulled the camshaft and was disappointed by what I saw. The #5 lobe has two nicks.
The #5 tappet looks OK, I think.
The question is whether I should replace the cam. If it was just for me, I probably wouldn't replace it, but since, given my age, I'm likely to foist the engine on some unsuspecting heir or estate sale person, I'm thinking I should swap it out. I wasn't wanting the expense!
And then I have this wear on the distributor drive shaft. I suppose that if I replace the camshaft, I'll also need to replace the distributor and oil pump drives.

The cam and lifter don't look good to me. What level of ZDDP is in the oil you use? From memory 1000 ppm would the least amount. Break in should be around 1500 ppm ZDDP.
If it was mine judging from the pictures the cam, lifters and both drives would get replaced. Get a second and third opinion before buying. Check the lobes with a micrometer. Are the lobes with the same function measuring the same?
A few years back when taking the cam from a SBC a similar issue showed up. One lobe showed wear. So new cam and lifters. Good luck to you.

Even if a poisonous snake or spider had bitten you, I don’t think that would keep you from engine building. Do you think this was the cause of the misfire or did the misfire result in that scoring?

Jeff, was the cam a reground OEM or was it ground on a new blank? There has been a problem with Triumph TR3-4 engines with cams ground on new blanks, where the drive gear was a little off, causing distributor drive wear. I don't know if MGs had the same issue? In either case, I think it is time for a new cam with that bad lobe.
