UPSTATE CHAT- ongoing conversations
#671
We have had many ongoing chat threads, when they hit 2000 posts we would close them and start new ones.
Is that necessary with the upgrade? I had seen that keeping the threads from getting much bigger than
that helps performance on the site.

^ that is exactly what I am trying to figure out. There is a thread in another community that has 42K in posts. There was some controversy that came from it, and I got involved. What I learned was we did have this requirement along time ago, as well as there was a hack to the software that would automatically close the thread after 2000 posts. So this 42K thread was functioning on the old site. This proves there is no hack to close the thread. I can not find any posted rules regarding this.
Closing a thread, and or moving it to the dumpster still means the thread is housed on the server. No benefit gained. We have always encourage folks, mods, CO's to not delete the thread, so we were hosting large threads anyways.
This new software, all the moderator, CO's have to do is press the delete button, and the thread automatically goes to the dumpster. Again, still housed on the server.

^ I believe Vintage also locks threads after a certain point and starts new ones. S1997 Jim should be able to tell you more.
Out here, the threads are not deleted, they just fade away. We've been having an off-topic thread tradition since Summer/Fall 2008. I have always been able to search for info in the old off-topic/chat threads. Doug locks them once we reach a 2000 post count.

There is no quantifiable benefit, but it does lend itself very qualitatively to the fun we have on here

That is fine, I was trying to track down where this might have been posted since it is fairly consistent throughout the site. As long has no one has a heart attack because a thread might go over the 2000 posts.

I slept in until 5 this morning Too much excitement yesterday Hope you get the warm temps up there Levy! We are supposed to have nice weather today and tomorrow. I think today will be running around doing errands day... good excuse to be outside.
Tomorrow I am headed for a cars and coffee event in the next town over. Hopefully Rich will get up early (for him) and join me
