I agree with Doug. It is always better to negotiate from a position of strength. Having a job will always give you more support in negotiating another job.
Many years ago I made the mistake of turning down a job offer because I felt they were not paying me enough. I struggled for a while only to accept another similar offer. But having that job and being good at it allowed me to ask for a pay hike. Eventually the experience also helped me move on to another job.
Cone Mark - sorry to hear your company is doing that. It seems to be quite the norm at several organizations though.

I've spoken my piece to Sarah (basically I think she should take whatever is offered), the rest is up to her.
I make enough that I can pay all the bills for both of us and still put a little away. Any job that she gets is just bonus money

Granted two paychecks makes a mortgage payment easier, but remember you only own 1/2 the house if something happens..............
In this economy two incomes doesn't necessarily translate into big $$$$$$$$$, lots of folks are now "underemployed" due to the recession.

glad it went well doug. i have an apointment next week with the world renown hand center at union memorial hospital here in baltimore. hurt my thumb back in december... hasnt gotten any better.. think i tore the ligament or tendon. had an xray... nothing wrong with the bone supposedly... at least according to a crappy patient first dr who probably never looked at an xray before in her life.
