Default Time for new tires

I also posted this in the tires forum, but I wanted to get some opinions from you guys who drive on the roads around here too.

Well, after 23k miles on the odometer, I think it is about time to replace the tires on my car. I think the RE050s that came with the car have held up pretty well, and I've been rather satisfied with the performance and road noise from them.

The general consensus around these boards from what I've read are that the RE050s are a fine tire, but the RE-01R is even better from a performance standpoint. I did some quick checking on tire rack, and the pricing between the two is very comparable to the point where price is not a factor for me between the two. Also, if I understand the treadwear rating correctly too, the RE-01Rs will last a bit longer than the RE050s as well.

For those of you that have run both, I'd really like to know how the two differed. It pretty much is down to these two tires for me I think. I'm a bit wary of moving away from the OE tires, since when I did that on my Subaru a year back, I wound up with tires that were greatly inferior to the OE tires. However, if the RE-01s are a decent step up from the RE050s, I would likely pull the trigger on them.

I plan on staying with stock sizing on my 2005. 17" all around, 215s up front, and 245s in the rear.

I can tell you that Doug's going to PWN this thread with pics and his insistence that you invest in a set of Hankook RS2's

The RE-01R will NOT last as long as the RE050s. It seems that their treadwear ratings are similar, but I've never heard of someone getting good mileage out of them.

The performance on the other hand, I've heard many a good things about the RE-01R

I'll give you a killer deal on a pair of 235-45-17 Advan A046 tires that I have. They're stock on the Evo and $290 each new from tirerack. I'd do $75 for the pair if you get them at the D&D next week. I'm not sure on the height, but the width would definitely work for the rear. Just something to keep in mind.

I have a pair of RE-01R's for the rear to slap on once I get the car good and ready for this season. I haven't driven them yet but they got my vote as treadwear was pretty fair for a max performance summer tire.

You got my vote on them.

I have run the RE01Rs since they cam out. Autocrossed the season on them in road tire class with excellent success and lots of tread left after the season was done. I can't compare them to the RE050s, having never driven them, but I don't think you can go wrong with the RE01Rs. The Advans are great tires by all accounts but are track R compound tires with short life and expensive replacement costs.

The vast majority of SCCA Street Touring folks are running RE01Rs and have to run regular street tires - there's your endorsement. Just put mine on again for summer and the grip, even in 30-40 degree temps, is outstanding. The cheaper tires (yes, the RS2s) simply don't compare unless cost is more important than performance.

The Hankook Z212 RS-2 are more than enough for the streets. To drive beyond their capability on the street is socially irresponsible. I see no need to throw money away.

For the track I have Toyo R-compounds, and the Bridgestones simply don't compare to them for performance.

My own $0.02...

If you haven't run anything other than RE01R's, how can you claim the RS2's don't compare?
