A combination of that and some brackets to anchor the 2x4s to the frame every 10 pieces or so.
I utilized 1/4" plywood spacers on each piece to help preserve the distance and prevent the boards from wobbling from being stood up on their ends. Each board is screwed into one another as well.
You could drive a Sherman Tank on that thing...only way it is coming out of there is with a chainsaw.

In the end, it cost me about $400 more in lumber & supplies, and maybe an extra day of labor, but the result is that I have something totally unique.
Besides, it was fun to think up something a bit different
