The fine was $100, paid to the town court. If your insurance won't increase, then I wouldn't fight it too much. My $350 total is not nearly what you would have to pay in fines for 80/55. You basically appear on the date that the ticket specifies, and talk to the DA (district attorney) (who works for the court) there. He'll ask you how fast you think you were going, you say 60, 65 tops, but definitely not 80. And he'll make a compromise with you and reduce it... Probably to 65 or 70 in 55 zone, which is 4 points. The DA should know that traffic radar is very prone to user (officer) error. And then, you'll probably end up paying roughly $130 in court fees and fines.
My first ticket (before I got the V1) was for 72 in 55. I used the above procedure and the DA reduced it to 59 in 55, (3 points on driving record) and paid about $90 some dollors in fines and fees.
Did you get the ticket in the US or Canada?
Radar detectors do help, especially the V1. It has helped me many times. But you still have to be careful when driving. The faster you go, the less time you have to slow down after the detector warning goes off.
I hope this helps you.
