HID Conversion Kit
Does anyone have any experience with doing a HID conversion on a non-HID equipped car?
I have a 2001 Maxima that I am thinking of doing such a conversion. It's got H4 (a.k.a. 9003) type bulb. The bulb has two filaments, Lo/Hi beam. I've seen (on the internet) conversion kits that only has an HID bulb, so you'll only have the HID Lo beam. I've also seen (on the internet) conversion kits that has Lo and Hi beams. The cheapo ones mechanically adjusts the position of the bulb. The good ones actually has a small halogen bulb on top of the HID bulb, and the halogen is used as the Hi beam.
I've seen youtube videos on conversion kit installs, it seems pretty easy.
Question is this: Is there any local auto accessories store where I can go and see it? I've very hesitant on getting such a kit from any internet sources. I want something high quality that works well. Any recommendations on brand?

I can offer up exactly no help at all...
Good luck with this project John. This time of year having to drive in the dark as much as I do, I can appreciate how this would be a nice mod for the Max.

Weren't HIDs optional on that generation of Maxima? Perhaps factory parts are available to retrofit. Maybe you should ask the Nissan parts dept. for advice.

Ahh, yes, I have gone the dealer route.
My 2001 is a 5th gen Max (2000 - 2003). In 2002, they started using HID and the body style remained the same. So yes, I can buy parts for 2002 and it will fit in the 2001.
Here's the kicker. To re-fit my 2001 with 2002's HID, including wiring, etc, will cost $4000 in parts and labor.

I would just use OEM parts and wouldn't go the retrofit route. Each headlamp with bulbs, ballast and wring is roughly $283 each or $561 for a pair. Installation shouldn't be that hard, they're just headlghts .
$4000 is just
Just my $.02

A lot of my friends go through there with great experiences. Also, don't go higher than 4300k. That is the highest light output you'll get.

I use the H4 HID kit that has the mechanical high beam( works well) that move the light up on my 98 Camry. It's pretty much plug and play type, I only have to plug one side of the light and left to other unplug because the kits does not use much power, and it very bright and reflective on street sign ( very safe for night driving) 6000k for almost a year now its still light up. Just look around for the mounting place because you may need to drill hole or just zip tide them to anything that is stationary on the engine compartment to mount the ballast. I'll post few picture of my camry later.

Thanks for the report!
How much do you know about the H4 types that have an additional halogen bulb (for the high beam) on top of the HID low beam bulb? Such as this one : http://www.xenonlink.com/product_inf...roducts_id=114

My bother has this kit for his Ford Cown Vic. and it's pretty much the same, I think the advantage of this is if the regular hid bulb burned you still have the high beam to play with, but eventually you will need to replace with new bulb. As the mechanical one like I have if its burned, I would be black out which ever side the bulb burned ==> the problem is that we have to replace the bulb no matter what. HID high beam is nicer I think.
