Doug tipped me off to his plans months ago, and I have ordered some hops plants too. We are going to put them in the ground this weekend, but instead of an elaborate trellis, I'm just going to plant them near trees at the edge of our property, and let them go where they want.

I worked on the upper brace last night, my concern is I have too many plants. I have a total of 8 coming, I spread out the lines for 7 on the 12' upper brace, and the ropes look too close together.

Right now I'm thinking I'm going to leave it and see what happens. If the plants are too close together the hops themselves will not get full sun exposure, but on the other hand it will make a solid wall of green. So it feels like a six of one verses a half dozen of another situation...

I'm going to do this with one of my plants down at Mon and Dad's, it's a big Ash tree, the tree is already starting to look sick, so we only expect it to live another few years, thus the vine can't do much to harm it at this point. This is the vine I'm going to really just let go. The vines at my house are going to be groomed and cared for, with lots of precise trimming. I have been doing my studying.

I may be expanding to three poles sooner than I thought...

I was thinking I would put in another 12' section this fall, but I might just be forced to do it sooner.

And again, I totally agree with ya, every time I see them I keep thinking goal posts...
