My wife has the Garmin nuvi 750 widescreen. She loves it.

One thing to watch for.... THEIVES.

I saw something on tv where theives were breaking into cars for the gps and garage door openers.

They then just drive to HOME and open the garage door to help themselves.

Don't use the Home function in the GPS.
I set my "home" to the fire station a mile from my house. So you can
still use the function and not risk giving someone potentially with your keys
directions right to your front door.

I think it would be better to set it to the nearest police precinct just in case someone stole it

That would work too.

You could set it to anyplace within 10 miles of your home, I mean, most
people know how to get to their house from 10 miles away.

Ok GPS question, all you guys go to your GPS and try to pan with it. You know move the screen so you can see 5-10-15 miles away. Tell me how easy it is.

This is the one reason I like the Alpine unit built into Rose's CRV it has a joystick and it pans FAST. You can pan to a location press set and away you go just ike that. Do any of the "portable" units do this is a FAST and easy fashion?

The Garmin's touch screen is pretty good. Never tried what you are asking though

Yeah, it is possible to pan with my Garmin unit. It's not as fast as Google maps, but it's doable. That's why I think the Garmin / Google Maps combo is awesome, because if you are able to plan your trip ahead of time, you can pan and search way-points to your heart's content on Google Maps and send those points into your GPS. Once you're on your car, just call up those points from your "favorites".

Thanks John, The GPS built into the CRV is on par with google maps panning speed. Once you have it other GPS units seem paltry.

Everyone must remember that when you have a GPS unit, you have on-going maintenance costs. You need to pay to have the maps updated. I personally have a Garmin Nuvi 255W, it's one of those 4.3in wide screen units. Quite nice. But to keep is useful for years to come, you have to periodically update the firmware (free) and update the maps (not free).

I find it useful even to/from places I am already familiar with, as it will tell you ETA.
The 265 unit I bought states it has a lifetime of free traffic updates. Is that different from map updates?

^ Yes, traffic updates are just that traffic condition updates for the road your on or going to go on. Map updates updates the roads themselves.
