gotta add that the text to speech thing is something I consider largely positive. The reason being I dont have to constantly look at the screen and keep my eyes on the road.
Also Doug, you may want to consider mounting something in your line of sight or not too far off the line of sight. The Friction mount I use allows me to put the GPS a little to the right of the steering wheel in both vehicles and within my line of sight. But again to each his own

I got the Garmin 260 wide srcreen unit. Haven't used it yet so can't give impressions but a lot of research led me to buy it. YMMV.

Yes you can. When you buy any Garmin and register the unit on Garmin's site, you get one free update, so your map is totally up to date. After that, it's up to you when you want to purchase additional updates - either individually or getting the lifetime updates.
Individual updates are totally not worth it. Buying 2 individual map updates is the same cost as the lifetime unlimited updates.

Another option which I think is great is to just buy a new unit every two years. This way you get the latest technology, updated maps and can sell the old unit to offset the cost. I'm thinking this is the way to go because the liftime subscription is easily half the cost of a new unit.
On the other hand, I really don't think these things change that much. As long as you only need the features that's related to navigation, once you get a model that does all of that, you should be set for many years... maybe 5 or 6 ?

I see the map updates wether lifetime or otherwise as a scam. Sorta like extended warranties which I never, ever buy.
How often are they building new roads? Gotta believe the existing map would be pretty accurate for a long time.
BTW...just ordered the Garmin 255W from Amazon for $99.

No map updates for me either. The first Garmin I bought back in 04 is still going strong with the Techie I supervised. He uses it all the time. I think it was a Street Pilot 2610?
Again, great deal on the 255W. Jealous....

Have you thought about replacing the top part of the dash with the mount that Nissan uses for the Garmin 700-series?
Too much work for such limited use
The unit will need to go from Frontier to S2000 to bag on back of VFR very easily, so something like a real mound I'm not interested in. let alone the hassle of tearing the dash apart, I have too many other things that are more of a priority, that job would just never get done, I know...
