Well I whacked together a quick mount last night
- cut plywood to fit into top shelf compartment on dash
- drilled the extra dash mount for 3-screw holes
- screwed the dash mount to the plywood
- applied velcro strips to the inside of the top shelf compartment
- applied velcro to the bottom of the plywood
- taped off the dash mount plastic and shot plywood with a quick coat of black paint
Presto, prototype 1 of the mount completed. Used it this morning and it was great, the unit is now much easier to touch as it is way closer to me. I'm not happy with how high it is though, it's about 3/4" above the top of the dash, so I want it about 1/2" to 5/8" lower. Next week I'll cut the bottom of the dash mount off and figure out another way to attach it to a new piece of wood, bit for this weekend what I have now is way better than the window suction cup.

Last thanksgiving, I drove my cousin's G35. It has a neat pop-up GPS device. I kinda like that idea of hiding the GPS and only popping it up when you need it.
