No, not set on Garmin at all really
I guess my confusion is mostly based upon the sheer volume of units that are available
How the helll do I know what to get?

It has to have US & Can maps
It has to have map upload/update capabilities
It can't be wider than 5" or so
It has to plug into a car power outlet and not be directly wired in
It would be nice if it could remember where I drove on a particular route
It would be awesome if it could be also run on just batteries
It has to have a volume setting as I'm not going to listen to the silly thing chat
It has to be able to tell me how to get to someplace after I enter a street adress
It has to give me a new route after I miss a turn

Am I missing something?
No, I don't think you're missing much. There are additional features available, but what you listed is all anyone really uses. It's also nice to have a database of points of interest so you can navigate to them (ie. where is the closest gas station?).

The problem is that I can't think of any modern GPS that doesn't have the basic functions you mentioned. Since that's the case, I say go for value.

That is my big complaint...why so many models?

From what I see, just about all of them will do what you are looking for, except run on battery. I'd like one that has a headphone jack so I can use it on the motorcycle. You can get bluetooth, but I'm too cheap to buy the blue tooth headset for the helmet.

I love my TomTom But mostly because it was only $99 at the time and all I could afford. If money were no object (if I win the lottery maybe) I'd definitely look around and comparison shop.

Doug I think most all of them all meet your above criteria these days. Even mine does all those except remember HOW I drove a particular route. I have "favorites", "home" etc I can save and edit, add to, etc.

I would check out some in person and play with them. The most annoying thing about Garmin is that AWFUL snooty bitch saying "recalculating" when you mess up

Speaking of "home", I heard a good tip...don't put your own address in memory. Put in something nearby so when it is stolen, the thieves won't show up and empty your house.

Why not just put the local police station address in memory then instead? :-P

GARMIN has the best text to speech ability and accuracy of any GPS systems I've seen. Its even better than the OEM GPS systems (Subaru & Honda) on those two factors IMO.

WTF - I get stuck in an unending meeting and Doug decided to buy a GPS

Hey! Doug, get a GPS that will also mount on your VFR. You dont want to get one that is too big to perch onto a bike.

I like the wide screens better.

Doug, if you are in no rush, when you come to ALB checkout my Nuvi.

It is no widescreen but I've never felt the need for a wider screen. I'll have it on for the drive. So see & judge and then make your choice.

Now if you really needed to buy one for the ALB-LI trip then I'd suggest Garmin. Better acuracy and their text to speech een with foreign sounding names is way better than anyone else.

The battery option was indeed a thought based upon the bike, however, I would never, ever, never ever, use the thing while I was riding. I would force myself to stop, get off the bike, and then check it out. I know myself, there is no way I could process mentally the visual data or the verbal data while I was riding, it would be too much of a distraction for me, and I like how the flesh is draped across my bones as it is now, and would like to keep it that way...
