The problem is that I can't think of any modern GPS that doesn't have the basic functions you mentioned. Since that's the case, I say go for value.

From what I see, just about all of them will do what you are looking for, except run on battery. I'd like one that has a headphone jack so I can use it on the motorcycle. You can get bluetooth, but I'm too cheap to buy the blue tooth headset for the helmet.

But mostly because it was only $99 at the time and all I could afford. If money were no object (if I win the lottery maybe) I'd definitely look around and comparison shop.
Doug I think most all of them all meet your above criteria these days. Even mine does all those except remember HOW I drove a particular route. I have "favorites", "home" etc I can save and edit, add to, etc.
I would check out some in person and play with them. The most annoying thing about Garmin is that AWFUL snooty bitch saying "recalculating" when you mess up

Speaking of "home", I heard a good tip...don't put your own address in memory. Put in something nearby so when it is stolen, the thieves won't show up and empty your house.

GARMIN has the best text to speech ability and accuracy of any GPS systems I've seen. Its even better than the OEM GPS systems (Subaru & Honda) on those two factors IMO.

Hey! Doug, get a GPS that will also mount on your VFR. You dont want to get one that is too big to perch onto a bike.

Doug, if you are in no rush, when you come to ALB checkout my Nuvi.
It is no widescreen but I've never felt the need for a wider screen. I'll have it on for the drive. So see & judge and then make your choice.
Now if you really needed to buy one for the ALB-LI trip then I'd suggest Garmin. Better acuracy and their text to speech een with foreign sounding names is way better than anyone else.
