Are you set on Garmin? They are both fine, but the newer GPS systems all seem to have the features that people want. I've found that TomTom is just lower priced. I had the good fortune to win mine in a contest, but it has worked well for me. I think Ellen depends on Tom as well

Amazon charges merchants 15-25% to sell there. If you find something on Amazon, try to buy it from the merchant directly to save even more.

I've started to look at them. This one has my attention right now.
Garmin 255W
Amazon seems to have the best pricing from what I've seen.

You can also buy refurbished on eBay for under $50:

However, if you find something new on Amazon, simply see the merchants selling it and search the web for their direct site. You can usually save more.

According to the Garmin site, that unit is 20-30 less than the ones I thought about, which would be great

I guess my confusion is mostly based upon the sheer volume of units that are available
How the helll do I know what to get?
It has to have US & Can maps
It has to have map upload/update capabilities
It can't be wider than 5" or so
It has to plug into a car power outlet and not be directly wired in
It would be nice if it could remember where I drove on a particular route
It would be awesome if it could be also run on just batteries
It has to have a volume setting as I'm not going to listen to the silly thing chat
It has to be able to tell me how to get to someplace after I enter a street adress
It has to give me a new route after I miss a turn
Am I missing something?
