Default Driving directions NYC to Rochester?

I will be coming up to Rochester in mid-August for the US Open golf tournament at Oak Hill.

I was hoping for some input on the best way to drive up to Rochester from the NYC area. I hope you all realize I can read a map but I wanted some insight on alternatives . . .
* West thru Pennsylvania, North to Rochester
* North to Albany, East to Rochester on the Thruway

We have all day Thursday to get to Rochester, so you could toss in some scenic roads if you like.

Lastly, is anybody familiar with the following Super 8. It was the only accomodation I could find (for less than $350.00/night). Talk about the local hotels gouging the customers.

Property Name:
SUPER 8 MOTEL - HENRIETTA/ROCHESTER AREA
Property Address:
1000 Lehigh Station Road
Henrietta, New York, US, 14467

Thanks in advance for your input.

Michael

Here's what I would recommend.

Take Rt. 17 into Binghamton (quite scenic drive through the Castskills Mts.). When you reach Binghamton, keep driving west on 17 until you reach I-86. Take I-86 (north?/west?) at Corning. Then, take I-390 (north). This will take you right into Rochester. This route is more direct than going north to Albany, then West on I-90, I think.

The way I usually go is 17 to Binghamton and than 81N to Syracuse, than 90W to to Rochester. I made it from Westchester in 5.5 hours to my garage.
Also the hotel is pretty much right off of 390 in Henrietta, I'll try and find out exact directions for you.
I'll see you at the PGA!!

I usually go more like Diskoe goes. jlangton's route is fast, but the drive from Syracuse to Rochester is 100% flat and an absolute boar.....

Once yu get to Henrietta, BUY YOURSELF a FINGER'S LAKE MAP. Pull out of the hotel and go SOUTH! Go see Canandaigua, then head to Naples. If you only have time for this, it will give you a great look into the world of Upstate. From Canandaigua to Naples you want to use Rte 21. After naples you want to go to Honeoye Lake, take the Honeoye/Naples road (I will have to check the County Rd. #).

Thanks for all the feedback. Looking forward to the drive and visiting the area.

Any thoughts on places to eat? I would expect big crowds in Rochester proper but if you have any suggestions for the outskirts, they would be appreciated.

Thanks again,
Michael

How far to the outskirts?

One place that has good food, and within 1.5 miles of where you are staying is The Cartwright Inn. Pull out of Super 8 by turning right onto Lehigh, go west about 1/2 mile, turn left onto West Henrietta Road at the light, go south about 1 mile, on the right just after the light for Erie Station Road is The Cartwright Inn.

I'll think of more, but off the top of my head, that was the best I could do.

Let me know how much time you will have to explore, I can set you up with some long, short or medium trips to see the Finger Lakes Region in more detail if you want.

Michael,

What day are you headed up? I think we PMd about this months ago - you were still looking for a hotel. I'm volunteering during the week, and will be at my friend's in-laws. I'm headed up on the 9th, and then to Pittsburgh on the 17th.

I posted in another thread that I'll be playing a little golf as well, probably Wed/Thurs if you want in. https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...threadid=136364

As for the drive up, I take 81N outside of Philly all the way to the Thruway (using 690? around Syracuse). Boring yes, rather quick, yes. I've made Buffalo in about 6, and expect Rochester in about 4.5 from Trenton.

Maybe I'll start a week of the PGA thread. (shhhhh - you're going to the PGA, not the US Open.)

DOH!!! I went to the US Open at Bethpage last year and have the ticket pinned up on a board next to my computer.

I'm driving up with my wife on Thursday 14th. I have tix for Friday and Saturday. I will most likely drive back Sunday morning but that is up in the air.

It would be great to meet up one night for drinks/dinner.

The big question is will James (jlangton) let us park in his driveway?

Lastly, TripleH, your welcome to close down this thread. Let's try and keep the golf fans in one place.

I have no problem with parking.......we have a big lot with plenty of open spots at our apartment, but we will still have to take at least one car to one of the entrance points. They don't let you go in the main drive during the tournament.
Also, dinner and drinks sound great. I don't think we will have any problem putting something together.
