Coming to Watkins Glen this year
So my wife and I missed the 24 this year we decided to road trip to the Glen in July for the 6hour.
Planning to camp as we typically do so we can take in the experience.
Any advice and information is welcome.
Preferred camping areas (oh yeah we are both in our 40s so not in the Cave Man Camping or Party Pit, etc)
Places to view
Proximity to hot showers (are there hot showers?)
Arrival timing to be able to get decent camping
Pretty much let's hear from your experiences
I notice that we can get reserved trackside - nice.
Thanks

My advice is probably less than useless. 1) I have never camped at a race event; 2) I have never camped at Watkins Glen. 3) I don't know much of what I'm talking about. 4) I'm not a competent spectator.
But if it was me, and assuming they are running the full course as opposed to the shorter NASCAR course, and assuming I had some sort of camper, I would opt for the Boot reserved area, Section F or the Inner Loop reserved area. These are all pretty far out from the main grandstands and concession areas, so you might want some sort of on site transportation.
The Boot reserved area is high up, so you are looking down to the track and are able to see a very large part of the Boot. Disadvantage is that sun will be in your eyes in the morning. But there are some tunnels and you can walk to the Boot "infield" pretty easily. Mid area or closer to the Toe is what I might prefer.
Section F is past the Bus Stop in the area of Turn 6 - a big sweeping turn. Nice view if you walk up to the fence.
Inner Loop reserved is at the Bus Stop. Fences set you pretty far back, and best to watch from the top of your camper.
Views from the infield at Turn 1 can be pretty stimulating.
But my personal suggestion is that you bag the race and come up with us in July and run the track with your S. See the Track Days 2016 thread. The tentative plan is that we will be doing the SCDA event. Your wife would be welcome.
Cheers

I haven't camped at the track in 30+ years. Very primitive then, but I think they have upgraded the facilities and showers are available. I would probably camp in "E" or "F" on the map below. Last time I went to the 6 hours, I started in the stands outside turn 1 for the beginning of the race. Lots of excitement and passing there. Also recommend the outside of turn 9 and anywhere inside the boot.
