Default Best tires for a fair-weather AP2?

EgoThreat's parents are picking up an AP2 this week - it's a used one that'll need new tires soon. What provides good value for driving around during the warmer months up there? They live in Oswego.

Some possibilities that are cheaper than the RE050s:
Fuzion ZRi
Kumho ECSTA 712
Sumitomo HTR Z II
Kumho MX

I'm not sure what to recommend because I'm guessing the roads up there don't get nearly as hot as they do here in Dallas.

I agree - the stock tires will probably be the best overall. Of the list you posted, I'd only consider the Kumho MXs (assuming you can get good sizes)...

Elistan,

Take a look at the BF Goodrich g Force Sport tires. I have these on my 240SX and they provide some very good grip along with nice, deep water grooves at a very low price of around $70 to $85 per tire. Tire rack and Discount Tire sell them. I think they're well worth it.

According to Tire Rack the OEM size is 215/45-17 and 245/40-17. I looked it up and will assume this is right. My suggestion unfortunately will not be out for seveal months. You can do a search in the TireRack forum for Hankook and you will find several threads about the Ventus R-S2 Z212. These are the tires I will be buying for my 16" rain track setup.

*1006766 245/40ZR17 XL

Well if it were me and I wanted to go with something a little less costly than the RE050 I would go with these.

Toyo Proxes T1R

215/45-17 = $129.00 (TireRack shows $152.00 for OEM Bridgestones)
245/40-17 = $141.00 (TireRack shows $181.00 for OEM Bridgestones)

Ironically enough these are the same tires I just bought for my '90 CRX-SiR because they are the only tire I can find in 195/55-14. All the reviews I have read ont hem to date have been rather good.

I have 712 experience, and I think they are complete crap. Some say they offer 80% of the performance for 50% of the cost, but that 20% drop in performance made my S2000 a nasty car to drive on the street.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all of the input, we'll work up some recommendations for the 'rents. Dad & Mom has been itching to buy an S since I let Dad drive mine several years ago. He used to have a great little 1980 MGB for cruising around upstate, Finger Lakes and ADKs and is looking forward to having something that won't require a trunk full of spare parts 'just in case' Other advantage... father's wisdom... "Now your mother can't buy $800 dollars of wine in the course of one day" (they like to keep a good stock of Finger Lakes wines around

They picked up the car in AR and are taking a leisurely cruise home. 2004 Rio Yellow, just the color they were looking for! I pointed them to the spring event coming up at the Glen, but they aren't sure if they'll make it.

Later,
C-
