So mpg's really suffer that much? Damn. I commute a lot so if it get's real bad I might not be able to do that at all then.
9KGhost your gonna be at the meet with an S2000 that has 4.77 gears? Thought you said your old S had them. Let me know.
I thought you could also get better gas mileage around town with them because you could shift up to the next gear earlier instead of staying in say 4th you could be in 5th but at a little lower rpm. On the highway it is really that much worse than stock gearing?

I'll correct you
A turbocharged s2k can get the same if not better gas mileage assuming the tuner knows what he's doing. I proved this by getting 31mpg on the highway which included a couple of heavy traffic spots of stop and go. The most mpg when I was stock was only 28 and that was coming back from fall colors 05 so one constant speed the whole time.
As for gears, when I had them I NEVER got better gas mileage or even the same. I went from an average of 24mpg down to 18mpg on average (with 4.57's) but I bet at least some of that could have been from me simply driving harder.

remember tire size also effects gearing so if you get the 4.77's and there to aggressive you can just get a tire that has more profile. try and find the zeroturn calculator and play around with the numbers.soon ill be installing my supercharger but if i ever went turbo i'd look into the 4.44's.

i know you are asking about 4.77s on an ap1 but i have 4.57s on an ap2, which is pretty aggressive
i am at 5000 rpms at 70 or 75 mph, which is pretty high considering my 8000 redline.. i see a noticeable drop in mpg at 55 vs 65 vs 75 due to drag and increased RPM
but to me, its worth it

alright. I guess I'll try the fifth gear test. Won't be quite as bad though correct? Didn't think it was a whole gear difference compared to stock. People really getting under 20 mpg's with the 4.77's?

if i went 60-65 with my mildly turbo'd s2000, i would easily get over 30mpg, but i go up to 75-80 (5000+ rpms!) and am almost boosting for the fun of it, my mpg goes down a lot
in addition, around town, i will redline first gear a lot just because its short and im not really speeding too much by doing this, thus reducing my mpg
your mpg will ultimately depend on you!

yeah. I guess now I usually commute to work doing like 80 where open. So I'm sure at that speed with the 4.77 gears I would get bad mpg's. Would have to either slow it down or not get the gears I guess. Would rather a turbo but much more money.
