Default Where in NJ is it safe for an S?

Hi, I'm thinking about moving to New Jersey from Manhattan (to save some on rent, and little tax to fund an S). In any case, my question is, which area do you suggest?

So here are my constraints:

1. I work in midtown Manhattan (E 52nd/Park), so I'll need to be able to get to work using the PATH and then subway at a reasonable time (say no greater than 45mins of commute one way). Edgewater is beautiful, but then it's a little far from any public transportation. I don't mind driving to work everyday if the rent's a little cheaper in there tho ...

2. The place needs to be relatively safe, and have a self-park parking lot (I hate Manhatta cuz they have mostly valet parking lots, and the park-and-lock lots are far from many apartment places with decent rental prices). I don't want to not be able to fall asleep at night if I park a somewhat nicer car.

Thanks.

Apartments....Hoboken/Jersey City is getting hot....lots and lots of young people. Brand new buildings have garages in them.

Cream of the Crop Neighborhoods.

Montclair (has 3 major train stations)
Millburn (train in center of town)
Livingston (no trains) Must drive to Montclair
(others add)

Great Neighborhoods

North Caldwell
West Orange

Jersey people will chime in tho....

( I am looking to buy a house in NJ pretty soon, so Ive been doing exhaustive research)

Hijacking for a second....

I was looking in Long Island, and nothing I liked was remotely near 1 mill. Tiny lots, ok neighborhoods at best..... While in Jersey, I found houses that were stunning....MASSIVE lots (talking acres) and quiet. Here is a pic of the one I am crossing my fingers to get.....

Sitting on 4 acres!!!

Good luck!

Montclair
Glen Ridge
Cedar Grove
Verona
Caldwells

all 40-70 minutes commute...reasonably car safe - but renting a garage or getting one with your living space should be poart of your search...

good luck.

I think monmouth county is the most sought (sp?) out county to live in NJ (as well as the most expensive to live in as of now) I believe.

Its safe over here but to get an arce of land expect to spend well over a million. Land doesn't come cheap around here but the area is nice with little crime if any really.

Question is what can you afford? You thinking of buying or renting?

My wife and I live in Montclair, we rent. Houses are out of site $$$ here. But the area is nice.

Add: Clifton
Cedar Grove
Nutley
Bloomfield
West Orange

Get a hold of the NJT train map and look for the stations that will help you to locate an area.

The above are all good (I'd skip Scotch Plains though...they are on a down hill slide. They used to be a high end area but lately its not so good and getting worse)
Here are some more with easy access to NJ Transit Trains. Avoid the buses that use Lincoln Tunnel by all means possible. The trains are all midtown direct into Penn Station.

Gillette
Berkley Heights
Madison
Chatham
Summit
Short Hills
South Orange
Great Notch
Metuchen

These are all great choices, however they are all very suburban. If you want the NYC feel however, you can't beat Hoboken or Jersey City. They are a quick Path ride to the city.

ALso FYI, TRAIN SCHEDULE

Clifton is definitely nice, especially by haddenfield st near clifton ave (near montclair state university).

Montclair is nice, extremely nice in certain areas.

Fort Lee, Palisades Park, Edgewater are also pleasant areas to live in, though it's getting quite crowded.
