what to do in nyc
Hey brethen nyc s2ki members, greetings from the cali. I'll be going on vacation to nyc with my gf and wanted to know what's fun to do (tourists stuff, events, bars, etc), where's a good place to stay (i'm guessing midtown), and where to eat? How's the public transit? I'd figure you guys/gals would know best, please chime in with your suggestions! Thanks!

there are a zillion travel websites ... best to check those ... I am sure you know about the Empire State Building, circle line tours, sta. of liberty, wall street, museums, plays, just too much to put in a response on this board. You may find it more affordable to stay in NJ at a hotel with ferry or train access to manhattan... just on the other side of the Hudson river -- I have no idea what your budget is or how long you are staying.
The public transit is one of the best in the world

Dont take public transportation during rush hour like i've had to do for 4 years day after day. It's one of the worst experiences of my life in NYC. You will spend most of your time in midtown since the rest of NYC is seen as a dump. I highly suggest you go into harlem areas and travel around there. It's really a eye opener for many people and really immerses you in culture I haven't seen here in Cali.
Resturants are plenty and really depends on what types you are looking for. Something fancy to take the g/f to or something new to experience? What foods do you like?
Harlem, Central Park and area, China Town, SOHO, Madison Ave (I'm sure your g/f will love that), and without a doubt 42nd Street are the places I would definately visit during my stay in NYC. During the day time, I suggest walking around since there's so much every single block. During the night, take the cabs if it's really late or trains if it's about 7-11pm or so.
Make sure you make reservations at a lot of places before you go because you might have to wait for over an hour if not.
Most importantly, hope you're ready to spend

thanks! i'm pretty much into any type of food that is moderately priced. i wouldn't say that i'm on a budget, but i'd still like to be a little conservative on the outgoing cash flow.

I disagree with the wait for restaurants ... all you have to do at 99% of the restaurants is to get there at about 5 - 5:30 p.m. .... you can usually walk right in and get a table (yes there are exceptions to this).
I also disagree about making seeing Harlem as a any sort of priority. You are a tourist, do the touristy things first; after that if you want to do the "wow -- social blight and poverty right here in NYC " thing ... fine. But don't make that a priority.
If you want a real eye opener -- go to a favela in Rio. That makes almost anything in NYC look like a luxury accommodation.
as for sites -- there are too many of them:

I really only suggested harlem (definately not a priority) because it'd be the most different place that I know of from the bay area, CA. I just dont see much of a point in travelling when things are a repeat and 42nd, Madison Ave, Central Park "feel" is all here in CA also. Not to mention those places mis-represents what NYC really is like.
BTW, I've never ever heard of falava but that looks like it's whole other country!
You're right about the resturants and the time but most people dont go for dinner 3-5pm. It also depends on what time of year you goto NYC and how crowded it gets. March isn't the busy season in manhattan. Then it depends on what resturant also. Reservations never hurt though.
Oh ya, take the big apple bus tour.
