While in graduate school, I was a new-student advisor and got to take the new students around, which included a trip to the Apollo Theater on amatuer night (awesome experience) and taking one of those double-decker tour buses. I think they are cool if you really want to know the history behind all of the landmarks/neighborhoods. The tourguide was very informative and I felt I learnt a lot about the city. Plus, you get to feel like you're at some wild animal park. Just don't feed any NYers
