Recent college graduate moving to New York
Hey everyone,
I've been a southern california native my whole life. I just graduated from college and am planning to move to New York to gain some work experience and to have the adventure of a lifetime. My friend told me the city of Williamsburg is a nice place to live. We have a combined budget of about $1500. I'm an out-going, extroverted kind of guy, and the idea of it being an artsy town with young business professionals drew me in. I'm planning on working on wall street, or somewhere downtown in the business districts. Literally, any and all advice about New York in generally will be greatly appreciated.
Jeff

Do you have a job lined-up yet? If not, it will be difficult to rent a place. Most places require proof of employment.
Williamsburg is cool but it's gotten wayyyyyyyyy...WAYYYYYYY too trendy with hipsters. The people were there maybe 5 years ago have moved on. These days, most of the young kids in Williamsburg are trust fund kids living in new, $500k-$750k condos.
$1,500 is probably a little tight. When I was in Jersey City, another metro neighborhood right across the Hudson from downtown, my studio was around that much. I didn't mind it since I was there only to sleep but for two people, it'd be like living in a dorm room.
Any other questions, just ask.

yeh a $1500 budget is a little tight for N.Y , with your budget ,i would recommend some where nice in queens like astoria or bayside, which are still somewhat expensive however much less then williamsburg, your still close to the city and there is pretty good night life,

Stay in lakewood. Isn't that near Long Beach? I would love to go back to SoCal again.
As for the proof of employment stated above is mostly true, one way to go around this is to look into the Chinese or Korean papers. Usually, there's no signing of the lease and proof of employment is a non-issue when you can fork over the two months rent deposit.
Good luck.
