Default Radar Detector: Are they illegal in NY

I drive in NY during school and jsut bought myself a V1. Are radar detectors illegal in NY? If so what are the fines/punishment. Are they strict with it, ie have anybody been pulled for radar detector use??? BTW my car will have Florida plates if that will help at all. Thanks. Rob

Radar detectors are legal in NY in passenger vehicles. Commercial trucks over 18,000 lbs are not permitted to have them.

The only places in the US that radar detectors are "illegal" in cars are Virginia and Washington, D.C.

theyre legal, but if you get pulled over there's nothing you can say to get out of the ticket.

that's why i like my V1 w/ concealed display. the v1 is mounted near the windscreen and the concealed display is tucked away behind the A pillar

They are illegal in the city. Going in through the Lincoln tunnel there is a sign that says they are prohibited. Also, mines is virtually useless on the Cross Bronx, since it goes off every 2 seconds.

The problem with the V-1 in Northern New Jersey and New York City is that it falses so often that it is almost useless. Unless you know the "hot" spots and can adjust for them, you will find yourself almost ignoring the constant warnings. As you can imagine, there are many, many "hot" spots in the metro NJ/NY area. I have gotten to the point where I almost ignore mine.

To the best of my knowledge radar detectors are legal in the entire NY/NJ/CT region for use in passenger cars. I am surprised that others have reported seeing signs to the contrary.
