Default Question: NY State Car Sales Tax

Does anyone know what NY state's car sales tax is (for a used car, if that matters)? I tried googling, but I get different numbers (8.xx, 4.00, 4.25% ...) DMV's site isn't the most helpful on as well.

Thanks.

it as same as any other taxable item. luxury tax will not be applied since it's used car.

I was wondering this as well... It seems I have to pay taxes again to register my S here in NYC? Anyone ever register an out of state car and have experience with this?

it is whatever the sales tax rate is at your residence. state + county + local town.

all different rates throughout the state.

Look for your county in this rate chart:

Nope. If you were not a resident of NYS when you purchased the car then you are exempt from paying tax when you register the car. You will need to fill out this form to claim the exemption:
