O & A versus Stern
#12
Here's my dissertation since I'm a long time listener.
I was a Stern fan until his movie. I would listen to the entire show everyday and then about 6 months before the movie came out it was nothing but overt promoting for 90% of the show. I would say he pushed about it for about 6-9 months after it was out making me want to vomit. I still listened but I was annoyed and felt short changed, the show almost seemed to have jumped the shark with the movie. (BTW I loved the movie and still watch it when its on)
I listed to O&A their first week on WNEW and really thought they were tools for a good six months. I realized that I was totally addicted and these guys had brass balls and appreciated that they didnt take themselves seriously. Once their show got bigger some of the special events were nuts. I went to the softball game in Newark and christ what a bunch of drunk animals (both them and their fans!).
When I found out the "Stern" clause was real it made me hate Howard. Knowing how he religiously preached about taking on anyone and smashing the competition having to kill the battle through lawyers seemed so trite. I've listened to his Sirius show probably half a dozen times and it just felt so flat, the energy just isnt there anymore.
Now as much as I love O&A their show is nothing compared to what it was IMO. It's more mature now and while that's a natural progression I miss Opie's total lack of control and Anthony's impressions. The world is too PC now for them to be appreciated (same with Stern) even on satellite radio.

Lil' Jimmy added so many more comics and insight into comedy then they had before him. I love when you get a combo of Bill Burr, Patrice, and Jimmy in studio at the same time. Christ they're ruthless to each other and then Anthony and Patrice get into their racism duels, its hysterical.
