stitos2k,
I'm assuming that $1500-1800 is for two people? I guess my biggest issue is that I have money saved up for a house, and don't want to spend $1300+ a month when I could get a mortage for a little more.
Then I could look at renting out a room to re-coup some of that investment.
IF (this sounds like a big IF from what people are saying) there are decent places to be had for $1K/month, i'd be willing to stick it out for a while.

I live at The Mews at Annandale. They are pretty nice. They are townhouses with a big private garage, your own entrance, washer and dryer, dishwasher, Central heat/AC, deck off the back, 2 bedroom, 2 full bath, walk-in closet, microwave... etc... These just finished building these apartments a year and a half ago... so they are pretty new.
Then we can caravan to all the meets together... woohoo!
If you decide to go with The Mews, let me know... so I can get the referral. Thanks!

My condo is currently selling for $270-290k. Its 1000sqf.
The average two or 3 bedroom townhouse in running $350k+
Moderate house is $500k. My parents 4 bedroom house is in the mid $500's. One of my co workers sold their 50 year old 3 bedroom cape cod for $425k.
My recommendation is DON'T look in Monmouth county . I managed to buy my condo at $185k during the start of the market boom but before it went completely crazy. If I had bought it 6 months earlier it would have cost me $145k.
BTW expect to pay anywhere from $3000-$5000 on property taxes if you buy anything, condo or house. If you buy new construction be prepared to pay $6000 to $12000. This per year btw.
Welcome to NJ, where they screw you in as many different ways as humanly possible. Oh, your car insurance is going to go up.
The moral here, if you can commute in from Penn. you are much better off.

No, the price was based on the unit not the number of people.
