I bought a S2000 and got ripped off

OP, I saw the article on Jalopnik and wanted to chime in with my support. It sucks to see a fellow S2ki member in a scenario like this one. I and plenty of my friends have bought and sold many cars on Craigslist, and have never been in a situation like yours.
I'm not an attorney or law enforcement officer, but since you signed the title and handed over a check, you assumed ownership of the car that day so this smells less like fraud and more like theft – you paid for the car "as-is" with the parts installed, and the parts were removed without your knowledge or consent. I hope you're in touch with the authorities in Los Angeles (and/or maybe even a lawyer...apologies if what I'm repeating something that's been said earlier, this thread is 14 pages long and counting).
Good luck. The force (this community) is with you!

Just read that Jalopnik article and I don't believe the owner of Paragon is completely clear of blame. At the very least, he has an employee that is managing his Facebook page who is incredibly unprofessional. The offensive responses and the initial posts that elicited them have since been removed but some members here look like they've got screen grabs of them.
Regardless, if the owner is, indeed, just a friend and not associated professionally with the seller, why did it take a Jalopnik article to communicate this? Why not make a post to the top of your Facebook page clearing up this "misunderstanding"? While the facts may be true to some extent, I don't buy the owner's sincerity when he claims to have no involvement in this transaction other than providing parking lot for his friend.
I think Jalopnik did a fair article based on what they knew and provided additional information to the story. They may not have seen the Facebook responses from Paragon and thus didn't question the owner about those posts. They told the owner's side of the story and still condemned the seller.

What are the odds some random internet person would take a screen shot of the original ad? It wasn't the owner that did, from my recollection, thus, the seller probably thought he would escape this issue free and clear.

Have always lurked as an s2000 owner. Joined just because of this thread. OP hope everything works out in your favor (as it looks like it will!) Those guys are scumbags & keep digging themselves into a deeper grave. Congratulations Paragon Automotive of Monterey Park, CA -- you've played yourself. They can't delete the FB comments fast enough. LOL
This is their newest post on their FB:
"LOTTA BIG INTERNET TALK FROM PEOPLE BEHIND KEYBOARDS THAT ARE NOT LOCAL AND WOULD NEVER SAY THESE THINGS THEY ARE SAYING IN PERSON. IT IS FUNNY HOW NONE OF THE LOCAL TOUGH GUYS HAVE CHIMED IN. TYPICAL HONDA CIVIC BASE MODEL OWNERS WITH THE 3 FOOT WING.
PROVES A SIMPLE POINT. BUSINESS GOES ON AND WE ARE IN BUSINESS AND BUSY."
