It's just a general hardware failure, I have the old HD plugged into another 360 and all the data is fine. Tho w/e causes the red ring also fried the 360's wireless network adapter.
Take your pick. Shoddy architecture, unskilled labor assembling the units, M$ wanting to maximize profits and cut corners when designing the original 360s.
