Billman Motion S2000 Repair Thread IV
#1772
Hey Billman,
Hope all is well. Just wondering if you could help me with an issue that I've been having for a little while now. I will try to post up a video as soon as I take the car out for a drive again, but until then, I'll provide some details of the noise the best I can below:
- The noise appears to be rotational, increasing and decreasing with speed.
- When in gear and traveling at speed, the noise appears to be muffled but appears to be coming from the shifter/tunnel area.
- Accelerating from 0mph to about 10mph, the noise does not seem to be present. Anything above that speed, and it starts to creep up, eventually getting louder.
- When coming to a stop, the noise is more prominent and can be heard clearly, eventually stopping when coming to a stop.
- In order to really try to dissect where it's coming from, I tried to drive the car up to 30mph, put transmission in neutral, and shut the car off (to eliminate exhaust noise). At that point, the noise appears to be coming from the tunnel area but it does resonate throughout the cabin, so its hard to pinpoint the exact place.
- The best way to describe the noise is similar to a loose driveshaft, clunky in a way. However, I inspected the driveshaft when I had it up on my buddies alignment rack and it seemed like it had no significant play.
- I have done some research and some signs do point towards the secondary shaft, but I do not have the space or tools to remove the back part of the trans. And I definitely do not have the tools/ability to rebuild any bearings (if that were the case).
Once I find a way to take a video in a way that the noise can be heard, I will update this post with it. This way, you can get a better idea as to the sound that it is making.
I have taken the trip to see you in the past, and I don't mind taking the trip again assuming the car will make it up there. However, if it's a transmission issue, I'm assuming it wont be a same day fix. In this is the case and if space is available, I would guess the car would have to stay up there. I know last time I was there, space was a little tight so I wanted to run it by you first to see what your thoughts were.
I appreciate your help...thanks!
